Description
A vintage French movie poster of ''Come Dance With Me'', a 1959 romantic musical comedy film directed by Michel Boisrond and starring Brigitte Bardot and Henri Vidal. The film is known by its original French title, "Voulez-vous danser avec moi?". It's a lighthearted and entertaining film that captures the spirit of the late 1950s.
The story revolves around the character of Virginie Dandieu, played by Brigitte Bardot, who is a beautiful and vivacious young woman. She is married to her husband, Michel, played by Henri Vidal, but their marriage has lost some of its spark. Virginie is passionate about dance and loves to go out dancing in the evening, which her husband does not particularly enjoy.
Things take an interesting turn when Virginie meets a charming and handsome young man named Hervé, portrayed by André Luguet, who happens to be a dance instructor. Hervé becomes infatuated with Virginie, and she becomes torn between her loyalty to her husband and her newfound attraction to Hervé.
As the story unfolds, there are various dance sequences and romantic escapades, with the characters navigating the complexities of love and desire. The film is known for its catchy musical numbers and Brigitte Bardot's iconic beauty and charisma.
"Come Dance with Me!" is a delightful and charming film that captures the spirit of its era. It's a romantic comedy with elements of musical entertainment and showcases the talents of its lead actors, particularly Bardot. While it may not be as well-known as some of Bardot's other films, it remains a notable entry in her filmography and a nostalgic piece of 1950s cinema.
About the artist:
Clement Hurel was born in Lorraine, France on March 14, 1927, and died February 12, 2008 in Paris. He was one of France's most important poster artists during the second half of the twentieth century, producing over 1,500 posters.
Starting early in his career, he worked regularly with film companies such as Gaumont, RKO, Société Nouvelle de Cinématographie and Hammer Film Productions. In Paris, he was awarded the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres for contributing to the enrichment of the French cultural inheritance.
Hurel’s poster style is amazingly recognizable. Heavily influenced by his career in the advertising industry, Hurel creates posters with few but very striking characters in the foreground. In addition, he often plays with the playful sensuality of female figures typically inspired by the 1950s pin-up genre.
The style is never realistic but rather caricatured, lighthearted, and humorous. From the point of view of colors, Hurel plays a lot on light tones, often juxtaposing black and white with cleverly colored elements. His figures even seem to be sketched as if they were pencil drawings or watercolors. Light and impalpable.
